Travel Through Painting: A Personal Souvenir
“Hello, and welcome to Travel Through Painting: A Personal Souvenir. In this exhbiit, I present to you my personal stories and realizations whilst traveling, through both my writing and painting. These memories are ones that I cherish dearly and am so grateful to share.
Art has always have been a great part of my life. I always doodled and graviated towards it, but it has not been until recently that I devloped my own style. In high school, I took my first official art classes and experimented with many medium and subjects. The first time that I worked with watercolor was a unit on watercolor feathers. I found the unpredictability of the fluid paint beyond frustrating to harness. The exercise brough me to tears on the floor. Since then, I have harnessed he brush, letting up on the water and embracing the “illustration-y” aesthetic.
I travel light with my watercolor set and my few brushes. The cups of water come from hotel rooms, water glasses at cafes and so on. As a rule of thumb, the small pieces are ones copied from my artist’s travel journal and the larger ones are done on home turf after the experience.
So why not just be happy with a photo? With a photo, there is minimal interaction with the subject. Take a medieval cathedral for example: with a photo, the camera captures all the detail. You may never interact with that detail at all. With a painting, you decide which details make the cut. Therefore, deep scanning and investigation of what you are interacting with is needed. With each of my paintings, I discover a detail that I would have never noticed had I simply printed out a photo.”
